For most of us there is work-life, and then there is life-life. There is the person that we are when we are when we are being productive and meeting expectations, and then there is the person that we imagine ourselves to be when we’re alone.
I think that we justify this binary arrangement with phrases like “work / life balance” so that the differences between our two selves goes largely unexamined and unreconciled. And for the most part, that works.
Until you think about the select few of us who by luck, determination or sheer will-power have managed to integrate the two (or maybe never separated it to start with). They are true to themselves, love what they do, and infuse that energy across their lives.
I think they’ve got the right idea.
