Every blog needs a UNC reference. :) Great post. An opinion coming from a project manager who was always "passing" to salespeople who got all the rewards, and I do mean All. I never expected recognition from the sales group, but I did expect salespeople to treat those who worked on my projects, from which salespeople directly benefited, with respect and a bit of gratitude. It rarely happened.

No one realized how much harder that made it to get a group to do great work again. And so...a less-productive culture is reinforced.

It's interesting to think about what an occasional Thank You, at all levels, can mean to future performance.

We've been talking about the high road here at Common Craft and doing what we can to take it. We're lucky to have fans that are inspired by our work. We wouldn't trade them for anything. However, sometimes their inspiration is borne out in videos that are very similar to ours and create confusion. Some call them rip-offs and it's easy to get all uptight about them. But we've learned not to.

Instead we assume positive intentions. The people who make videos like ours are sometimes our biggest fans who never intended to create confusion. By approaching the issue (and them personally) with a positive assumption, it's easier to talk about the issue at hand and not come off like a bully.

So, that's my 2 cents. :)

which makes me wonder - when people's roles are entrenched (or at least they feel entrenched) what's the motivation to break out? I cling to this idea that clarity and integrity will show people the light...but there's no real motivation for people to aspire for that greater perspective when often so little is expected of them in the first place.

Very interesting -

Leadership is also required to shelter the followers from pressure and unreasonable expectations - while keeping the team just out of comfort zone.

Colin Powell says Art of leadership is to be able to achieve more than what science of management says is possible.
